What you can do about a slack waistband
Short answer: If the elastic sits in a channel, it can be replaced in a quarter of an hour. If it is sewn on, you can stitch a few gathers, but the result rarely lasts. Here is what you can do, and when it is better to give the garment a new role.
A channel is the easy case
Many waistbands have a channel with the elastic lying loose inside. Here you need neither a machine nor much experience. Unpick a few stitches, pull out the old elastic, and you are well on your way. It is the simplest repair you can make on a garment, and it often works better than expected.
How to replace the elastic
Pin a safety pin to one end of the new elastic and thread it through the channel. Hold the other end so it does not disappear inside. Sew the ends together with a few solid stitches and close the opening. Then the garment is like new. It rarely takes more than fifteen minutes, and you only need a needle and thread.
Sewn-on elastic is harder
If the band is sewn directly onto the edge, it has to be unpicked all the way round, which takes time and usually needs a sewing machine. It is quite doable, but a different kind of project. For bamboo shorts for men and similar garments, use elastic as wide as the old one.
The emergency fix
You can sew a short zigzag across the band in a few places to pull it in. It holds for a while, but it puckers, and you feel the seams against your skin. Use it only as a stopgap until a proper repair, not on garments that fit close and are worn all day.
How long the elastic should be
Measure your waist and subtract five to ten percent so the band holds without squeezing too much. Add a couple of centimetres for the seam where the ends are sewn together. Try the garment on before you close the channel completely. Elastic that is too short leaves marks, and elastic that is too long is no better than the old one.
Choose the right width
The new elastic should match the old in width so it fills the channel and does not twist. If it is narrower, it rolls up inside; if it is wider, it will not pass through. Take a piece of the old one to the haberdashery. Elastic for underwear like bamboo underwear for men should be soft against the skin.
Do not make it worse
You cannot boil elastic tight again. Heat damages the elastane further, and the result is a waistband that is even looser than before. Also avoid hot drying after the repair. Wash at a low temperature and air dry, and the new elastic will last longer.
Is it worth repairing
If the rest of the garment is in good shape, it is often an hour well spent. The fabric, seams and colour may still be like new, and it would be a pity to discard it for a loose waistband. If the fabric itself is worn thin, spend the time on a new garment and keep the old one for home.
Preventing a loose waistband
Heat and constant stretch wear on a waistband the most. Wash at a low temperature, avoid the tumble dryer and rotate between several garments so each waistband rests. Choose a size that does not pull all day. For winter, bamboo long johns make a good layer that you can rotate regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Can you boil elastic tight again
No. Heat damages the elastane further and makes the waistband looser, not tighter. Replace the elastic if it sits in a channel, or sew in a new one.
