Why the rib at the neck goes slack

Short answer: The neckband stretches every time the top goes over your head. If the rib has no elastane, it only lasts as long as the yarn itself can contract, and heat and frequent washing make it give faster. With a little care you can make it last longer.

The head is bigger than the neck

Every time you pull the top on or off, the band has to stretch far beyond its resting shape to clear your head. It is the biggest single strain the neckband faces. Repeated hundreds of times over a few years, the band inevitably becomes slightly wider, even in a good quality garment.

Rib alone is not elastic enough

The folds in a rib can be pulled flat and contract again, but without an elastic thread they only partly return. After many repeats the band becomes wide and loses its firm line. This applies to other ribbed garments too, such as bamboo sweatpants for men, where the cuff is strained in the same way.

Heat speeds it up

Tumble dryers and high wash temperatures weaken both elastane and the yarn's own tension, so the rib loses its shape faster. The neckband is thin and sits on the outside, so it feels the heat first. A low temperature and air drying is the easiest way to protect it, and it costs nothing.

How to take the top on and off

Do not pull on the neckband when you take the top off. Grab the back of the top instead and pull it over your head in one movement. If there are buttons or a zip, open them fully. Many small tugs in an uneven direction make a wavy band, while one calm pull strains the rib least.

Why some neckbands turn wavy

Waves appear if the rib was attached too loosely or has lost its tension unevenly. One side then pulls more than the other, and the band does not lie flat against the body. You often see it first on the side of the neck you usually grab when pulling the top on.

Washing and drying

Turn the top inside out, wash on a gentle programme and do not hang it by the neckband, because the weight of the water pulls it out. Lay it flat or hang it by the shoulders. The same goes for underwear like bamboo underpants for men, where the waistband likes the same treatment.

Can a loose band be tightened

Only temporarily. A wash and a short dry can pull the band in a little, but the effect fades and too much heat makes the damage worse. A new rib band means unpicking the old one and sewing on a new one, which is a job for a tailor. For a simple basic top it is rarely worth it.

Choose a neck that fits

When buying, pull gently on the neckband and see whether it goes back cleanly. A neck that is a little too tight is strained every time, and one that is too open hangs from day one. Choose a neckline that goes over your head without a fight and lies flat afterwards.

When it is time to say goodbye

If the neckband lies in waves or slips over your shoulders, it is worn out. The top can still be used at home or at night, where fit matters less. For daily use as a layer under a jumper, bamboo long johns can be a sensible addition when the cold weather comes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a loose neckband be tightened

Only temporarily. A new rib band means unpicking the old one and sewing on a new one, which is often more effort than a single garment is worth.

How do I protect the neckband

Take the top off by pulling on the back rather than the band, open buttons fully and avoid hot drying, and the rib keeps its shape for longer.

Why do some neckbands turn wavy

Because the rib was attached too loosely or has lost its tension unevenly. One side then pulls more than the other, and the band does not lie flat.
