Why socks roll down into the shoe and what to do about it

Short answer: A sock rolls down when the heel sits wrong, when the cuff is too short for the foot, or when the elastic has lost its stretch. Three causes, three different solutions.

The heel sits wrong

If the heel pad does not sit under your heel, the sock is pushed down with every step. That happens when the size is too big. Try a size down. See all bamboo socks for men.

The cuff is too short

If the sock is shorter than the distance from heel to shoe edge, it has nothing to hold on to. Then you need to go up in length, not in size. See bamboo trainer socks for men.

The elastic is used up

Elastic loses its stretch from heat. If the socks have been through the dryer many times, they cannot be saved. Wash at 40 degrees from now on and dry on low heat. See washing and care.

The shoe can also be the cause

A shoe that is too big lets the foot slide, and the sock follows. That is not a sock problem, but it is experienced as one. See bamboo footies for men.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my socks roll down?

Either the heel sits wrong, the cuff is too short, or the elastic has lost its stretch.

Can a slack sock be saved?

No. Elastic that has lost its stretch to heat does not come back.

Does a smaller size help?

If the heel sits too far forward, yes. If the heel sits right, the cuff length is the problem.
