Your clothes feel rough after washing and why that happens

Short answer: Rough fabric comes from limescale, detergent residue and line drying without movement. Rinse better, use vinegar against limescale and give the laundry ten minutes in the dryer.

The three common causes

Limescale from hard water settles as small crystals between the fibres. Detergent residue stiffens as the fabric dries. And line drying without wind leaves the fibres in whatever position they dried in, which feels hard against the skin.

Fix the limescale and soap

Run a wash with no detergent and a cup of white vinegar in the softener drawer. Then reduce the dose and use an extra rinse if your machine has one. Two washes are enough to feel the difference.

Movement makes fabric soft

Shake each garment firmly before you hang it. If it is still hard when dry, give it ten minutes in the dryer on cold. The fibres loosen and the fabric softens again with no heat damage. See bamboo towels.

What not to do

Fabric softener makes fabric slick rather than soft and destroys its ability to absorb moisture. For bamboo viscose that is the wrong direction. See bamboo underwear for women and bamboo bedding.

Frequently asked questions

Does bamboo viscose get harder over the years

Only if limescale and soap build up. The fibre itself softens with wear.

Does washing hotter help

No. Rinsing and dosing matter more than temperature for softness.

Is line drying worse than tumbling

Not worse, just different. A short spin in the dryer afterwards gives the best of both.
