Bamboo clothing for tradespeople and physical work

Short answer: Physical work makes you sweat a lot, even in winter. A thin base layer in bamboo viscose keeps the skin drier than cotton, which gets wet and cold as soon as you stand still.

Cotton gets cold

A cotton T-shirt soaks up sweat and stays wet. As long as you keep moving you do not notice, but when you stand still afterwards you get cold quickly. Bamboo viscose moves moisture away from the skin, so the inner layer feels drier when the pace drops during the day.

A base layer in winter

A thin inner layer warms more than an extra jumper on top, because it keeps the skin dry. Dry skin holds on to heat better. Choose a base layer that fits close without squeezing, so it can take the sweat. See bamboo undershirts for men if you work outdoors in winter.

Long underwear

For outdoor work in the cold, a thin layer on the legs is what most people are missing. Work trousers are often sturdy but loose, and they let the cold in. A close fitting layer underneath makes a big difference on scaffolding or in a cold unfinished building. See bamboo long johns.

Socks in safety shoes

Safety shoes and boots close completely around the foot, and feet get wet quickly. Wet socks lead to blisters and cold feet when you stand still. A sock that moves moisture away keeps the foot drier and reduces smell. Read more in socks for safety shoes and boots.

Underwear that does not chafe

When you move a lot, seams rub against the skin, and you feel it after a full day on your knees or up a ladder. Flat seams and slightly longer legs reduce chafing on the inner thighs. The waistband should stay put without digging in when you bend. See bamboo underpants for men.

Layer on layer

The best system is three layers. Inside, a thin layer that moves sweat; in the middle, something warm; and outside, durable workwear that handles wind and rain. That way you can remove a layer when working hard and put it back on during the break without the inner layer getting wet.

Changing at work

A spare set in the car or locker means you can change when the inner layer is wet. Many people only change socks, but a dry base layer makes just as much difference after a hard morning. Especially in winter, it is nice to start the afternoon in something dry.

In summer

In summer the problem is the opposite. You sweat a lot, and a heavy cotton top sticks to your back. A thin layer that moves moisture feels lighter in the heat. Drink plenty and take breaks in the shade, because clothing can only do a small part of the job on a hot day.

Washing

Workwear is washed often and has to cope with it. 40 degrees and no fabric softener keep the fabric able to move moisture, because softener coats the fibres. Dry the clothes on a rack rather than in the tumble dryer. See the washing guide for more.

The outer layer takes the wear

Bamboo viscose is a soft fabric and is not made to withstand sharp edges, concrete and tools. Use it as a base layer under your workwear and let the sturdy outer layer take the wear. That way you get the softness against the skin without wearing out the inner layer.

Frequently asked questions

Is bamboo strong enough for workwear

As a base layer, yes. The outer layer should still be durable workwear that takes the wear, while the bamboo layer inside handles sweat and comfort against the skin.

Why do I get cold during breaks

Because a wet layer against the skin draws heat away when you stand still. A layer that moves moisture away keeps the skin drier and you warmer during breaks.

How many layers do I need in winter

Three is a good starting point: a thin base layer, a warm mid layer and an outer layer against wind and weather. Then you can add or remove layers as needed.
