The production of bamboo rayon begins with grinding bamboo stalks into pulp. This pulp is dissolved in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), which breaks down the cellulose fibers. Carbon disulfide is then added, making the dissolved cellulose spinnable. The fibers are rinsed, dried, and spun into yarn.

Benefits for Consumers

• The fabric is silky soft and very comfortable.
• It has excellent temperature-regulating properties and effectively absorbs moisture.
• It is more affordable than lyocell and is therefore used in many products.

Production Challenges

• The chemicals: Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive, while carbon disulfide is toxic and can evaporate.
• Environmental Impact: The process is typically an open-loop process in which chemicals and water are only partially reused.
• Work Environment: In countries with weak regulations, workers may be exposed to hazardous vapors.

In short: Bamboo rayon produces a soft and luxurious fabric, but the manufacturing process has a high environmental impact.

Bamboo Lyocell – The Modern Approach

Just as with rayon, the process begins with bamboo pulp. But instead of harsh chemicals, N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) is used as the solvent. The pulp and solvent are mixed in a closed-loop system, where nearly everything is recycled. The fibers are formed, rinsed, and dried—resulting in a strong, lustrous, and silky-soft yarn.
