How to wash bamboo clothing by hand
Short answer: Hand washing is gentle but requires you to rinse properly. Use lukewarm water, a little detergent, and avoid wringing the clothes, because wringing pulls the fibres out of shape.
Lukewarm water
Around 30 degrees is enough. Warmer water gives no extra cleaning but wears the fabric.
A little detergent
A teaspoon in a basin full of water is plenty. Too much detergent is hard to rinse out and leaves residue.
Let it soak
Let the clothes sit for ten minutes rather than rubbing them. The dirt loosens by itself in most cases.
Rinse thoroughly
Rinse until the water is completely clear. Detergent residue is the most common cause of itching and smell.
Do not wring
Press the water out rather than wringing. Put the garment in a towel and roll it up if it has to dry quickly.
Dry flat
Heavy, wet pieces pull out of shape if hung on a hanger. Lay them flat.
General washing
The rest of the rules are in the washing guide.
What suits it
Hand washing suits bras, thin tops and underwear best. Sweat pieces and towels get too heavy to handle wet. See bamboo bra without underwire and bamboo underwear for women.
On the road
Hand washing is also the answer when you are away from home and need a clean set of underwear for the next day. See bamboo underwear for men.
