Quality T-Shirt vs. Cheap T-Shirt – What Are You Paying For?

Short answer: The difference between a cheap and an expensive T-shirt lies in the fibre, the knit and the seams. An expensive T-shirt keeps its shape longer, pills less and holds its colour, which is why it often costs less per wearing, even though the price tag says otherwise.

Fibre length decides most of it

Long fibres give a smooth surface that pills less and feels softer. Short fibres stick out of the yarn, roll up and become pills after a few washes. That is the single biggest difference between a cheap and an expensive T-shirt, and it can be felt with your fingers in the shop.

The weight of the fabric

The seams you can see

Turn the T-shirt inside out. A sewn in tape at the back of the neck holds the shoulder in place, a double stitched neckline does not ripple, and straight side seams mean the fabric was cut properly. If the seams are skewed, the T-shirt twists after the first wash.

The neckline gives up first

On most T-shirts the neckline is the first place to look worn. A cheap edge is sewn in one layer without elastic and loses its recovery after a few months. A good edge is knitted with stretch and stitched twice, and it pulls back every time.

Colour and how long it lasts

Cheap dyes sit on the surface of the fibre and release in hot water. Good dyes penetrate the fibre and stay there. Test it yourself: a T-shirt that still colours the water after three washes will go grey over a season, whatever the brand promises.

The cost per wearing

A T-shirt at twice the price that lasts three times as long is cheaper in the end. The sum only holds, though, if the garment actually gets worn three times as much. An expensive T-shirt in a colour you dislike is still a poor buy.

What you are not paying for

A high price is not in itself a mark of quality. You also pay for the brand name, the marketing and the location of the shop. So judge by the weight of the fabric, the fibre and the seams, not by price alone. Those three take two minutes to check.
