Washing at 30, 40 or 60 Degrees – What Happens to Your Clothes?

Short answer: Wash temperature is a trade off between cleaning and wear. At 30 degrees clothes are spared the most, 40 degrees is the good everyday balance, and 60 degrees removes the most bacteria but wears noticeably on fibres, elastic and colours. Bamboo clothing belongs at 30 to 40 degrees.

What temperature does

Heat helps detergent dissolve grease and dirt, but it also makes fibres swell and move more. The warmer the water, the more wear on fabric, elastic and colour. The right temperature is therefore the lowest one that gets the clothes clean.

30 degrees: the gentle option

At 30 degrees clothes keep their colour, fit and elastic best, and energy use is low. Modern detergents are designed for low temperatures, so lightly soiled everyday clothing comes out perfectly clean. It is a good choice for clothes that have only been worn for a single day.

Delicates at 30 degrees

Delicate items such as a bamboo wireless bra and thin nightwear do best at 30 degrees. Fine fabrics and delicate elastic last longer when the water is not too hot. Use a wash bag, and choose a gentle programme with a low spin.

40 degrees: the everyday workhorse

At 40 degrees grease and sweat dissolve more effectively, without wear increasing much. It is a good temperature for clothing that sits close to the body and is worn daily, such as underwear, socks and T-shirts. For most bamboo items, 40 degrees is the natural starting point.

Underwear for men

Bamboo underwear for men is best washed at 40 degrees with other underwear and socks of the same colour. Turn it inside out to protect the waistband elastic, and avoid filling the machine completely. That way boxers and briefs keep their shape longer.

Underwear for women

Bamboo underwear for women can also be washed at 40 degrees. If there is lace, thin straps or fine detailing, 30 degrees in a wash bag is the safest choice. The elastic keeps its stretch, and the soft fabric stays smooth and comfortable against the skin.

60 degrees: only when necessary

60 degrees removes more bacteria and dust mites and is traditionally used for tea towels and bath towels. But the cost is high: colours fade, elastic weakens, and bamboo viscose can shrink. Only wash bamboo at 60 degrees if the care label allows it, and only for a specific reason.

When it makes sense

There may be times when a hot wash feels right, for example after illness in the household. Always check the care label first. If 60 degrees is not allowed, wash at 40 degrees with a good detergent, and let the clothing dry completely, ideally outdoors in fresh air.

Energy and wear

Heating water to 60 degrees uses noticeably more energy than heating it to 30. At the same time, clothes wear out faster and need replacing sooner. A lower temperature is therefore both cheaper to run and better for the life of your clothes, as long as they come out clean.

How to choose

Ask yourself how dirty the clothing really is. Lightly worn: 30 degrees. Underwear, socks and sportswear: 40 degrees. Cotton tea towels and bath towels: 60 degrees, if the label allows it. And bamboo clothing always stays at 30 to 40 degrees. See also complete washing guide for bamboo clothing.
