Does Bamboo Clothing Need Ironing?

Short answer: As a rule, no. Bamboo clothing creases less than cotton and smooths itself out if you hang it up right after washing. If you do need to iron something, a shirt for example, use low heat, ideally with the steam on, and iron on the reverse side.

Why you usually get to skip the iron

The smooth, supple fibres of bamboo viscose fall back into place by themselves while the garment hangs and dries. Shake the garment after spinning, hang it on a hanger, and smooth the seams and collar with your hands. T-shirts, underwear and nightwear never need ironing, and the same goes for bamboo bedding if you fold it while it is still slightly damp.

When the iron does come out

A bamboo shirt for men or a pyjama shirt can benefit from a light press. Use low to medium heat, often marked with one or two dots on the iron, iron on the reverse side, and use steam rather than harsh heat and pressure. Too much heat can leave shiny marks and damage the fibres.

Steaming instead of ironing

A handheld steamer is gentle and quick on bamboo: hang the garment up and let the steam pull the creases out. It preserves the soft drape of the fabric better than an iron does. You will find more gentle habits in the complete washing guide for bamboo clothing.

Frequently asked questions

Does bamboo clothing need ironing?

Normally not. Hang the garment up right after washing and the creases fall out by themselves. Only shirts and similar pieces need a light press.

What temperature should the iron be on for bamboo?

Low to medium heat, typically one to two dots. Iron on the reverse side and preferably with steam, so the fabric is not damaged.

Can I use a steamer on bamboo clothing?

Yes, a steamer is in fact the gentlest choice. The steam smooths the creases without direct heat and pressure on the fibres.
