When Should You Replace a Bra?

Short answer: A bra usually needs replacing when the elastic is slack, the band rides up at the back, or the fabric has lost its shape. For most people that happens after around a year of regular wear, but it depends on how many bras you rotate between and how you wash them.

The signs that it is time

If it sits loose, you are working against it

A bra that does not carry moves the whole job up into the shoulders and out into the straps. You notice it as sore shoulders and as an urge to adjust it several times a day. That is not a habit, it is a signal that the item is finished.

The elastic is the best test

Pull the band out at the back and let go. If it snaps straight back, there is life in it yet. If it hangs for a moment, the elastane is tired, and then neither a tighter hook nor a fresh wash helps. That is the part that gives up first.

How to make your bras last longer

Rotate between at least two or three models, so the elastic gets a rest between wearings. A bra worn two days running does not get the chance to contract again. That is the single habit that does most for the lifespan, and it only costs having a spare in the drawer.

Washing decides the rest
