Why socks are knitted as a tube

Short answer: A sock comes out of the machine as a tube with no side seam. That is the only way to avoid a seam along the foot, where the shoe presses all the time. Only the toe is closed afterwards, which is why the toe seam is the only seam in a sock.

The machine knits in a ring

A sock machine has its needles set in a circle and knits upward, round after round. Leg, heel, foot and toe come in one long movement without the fabric being cut. So there is no side seam to rub under the foot, and the sock has an even shape all the way round.

The heel is formed along the way

The machine knits on only part of the needles at a time and so builds a pocket for the heel. That is why the heel sits precisely when the size fits. The heel is not sewn on afterwards but is part of the tube itself. See all bamboo socks for women for the full range.

Only the toe is closed afterwards

The tube is open at the end and is closed with a seam or a machine closure. That is why the toe seam is the only seam in a sock. It runs across the toes and is kept as flat as possible so it does not press against the shoe. You can feel it by running a finger along the tip.

Why a side seam would annoy

The foot is under pressure at every step, and a seam along the side would rub against skin and shoe. That can cause sore spots and faster wear right there. The tube makes it possible to keep the sock smooth, so the pressure from the shoe spreads evenly over the whole foot.

The toe seam and how it feels

Some machines close the toe automatically, so the seam is barely noticeable. Others are closed by hand with a heavier seam that can feel thicker. If you have sensitive toes, turn the sock inside out and look at how the seam lies. See bamboo socks for women.

Tube and size

Because the sock is knitted as a tube, its size is a circumference that stretches with the foot. If the sock is too big, the tube folds under the foot. If it is too small, the heel is pulled too far forward. Choose the size that fits your foot, not simply the tightest.

Can a sock be knitted flat

It can be done, but then the sock must be sewn together along the foot, and the seam sits where the pressure is greatest. That is rare for everyday socks. Flat knit is more often used for other garments, where a seam does not lie under body weight and movement.

How to check a sock

Turn the sock inside out and look for seams. There should be only one, at the toe. Check that the heel looks like a small pocket and that the tube is not twisted. A sock without a side seam lies smooth against the foot and gives fewer rubbing points in the shoe all day.

Care so the toe seam lasts

Trim your toenails so they do not catch on the seam, and wash socks inside out at a low temperature. Hard drying can tighten the seam, so let socks dry calmly. Pair socks with a bamboo petticoat if you wear dresses in the colder months.

Frequently asked questions

Are there socks with no seam at all

Yes. Some machines close the toe automatically, so the seam is barely noticeable. It is still there, but so flat that it rarely presses against the shoe.

Why do some toe seams feel thick

Because they were closed by hand with a heavier seam. Automatic closing gives a flatter seam. Turn the sock inside out to see how the seam is made.

Can a sock be knitted flat

It can, but then it must be sewn together along the foot. The seam then sits where shoe pressure is greatest, so everyday socks are normally knitted as a tube.
